The TickerA mid-match ankle injury has forced Vera Zvonareva to retire at 1-1 in her match against Virginie Razzano in Charleston.

"When I played my forehand across the court, she tried to get the ball, but she couldn't and she went down and was in a lot of pain," said Razzano.

It's not known whether Zvonareva will be fit to play her next scheduled event, which takes place at Stuttgart in two weeks' time.

The TickerPost-match reaction from Federer: "Today definitely my serve wasn't working. I haven't served my best throughout the season, so I have to make sure I get my serve back in, going well for me because I just don't hit the spots when I really want to.

"Not that I expect, you know, 10 aces a set here on this type of heavy clay, but I just think it's something I need to work on, make sure my timing gets right, my footwork gets right, and my forehand, that I use it the right way.

"It just showed me again this week what I need to work on for next week."

The TickerPost-match reaction from Wawrinka: "It is maybe not the most spectacular tennis but it's my most beautiful victory... I am a bit embarrassed to celebrate it."

The TickerCarlos Moya plans to return to the tour after the US Open following pelvic surgery for a tendon injury that has kept him off the tour since February. Moya estimates that his recovery will take three to four months, but prefers to return after he is eligible for a protected ranking.

The TickerTennis players nominated for Laureus World Sport awards: Rafael Nadal (World Sportsman of the Year), Venus Williams (World Sportswoman of the Year), Novak Djokovic (World Breakthrough of the Year), Ana Ivanovic (World Breakthrough of the Year).

The TickerSabine Lisicki defeats Venus Williams 6-4, 7-6(5) at Charleston.

The TickerThe Melbourne Age and crikey.com.au are citing suspicious betting patterns in the first-round match at Monte Carlo between Martin Vassallo Arguello and Igor Andreev. The higher-ranked Andreev started the match as a $1.35 favorite but his odds increased to $2.10 after he won first set, indicating that belief he would win the match had actually decreased.

Andreev went on to hold three match points while serving at 5-4, 40-0 in the second set, but Vassallo Arguello came back to win 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-2.

Betfair did not suspend betting at any stage during the match, which attracted a fairly standard $1.4 million worth of wagering. [Corrected]

The TickerRoger Federer is out of Monte Carlo after a 6-4, 7-5 defeat to countryman Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round.

Wawrinka needed to convert only three of his 14 breakpoints during the contest and fought off breakpoints on his own serve as he tried to close out the match at 6-5 in the second set. On a damp, windy day, Federer made 31 unforced errors, 22 on his forehand, and got in only 51% of his first serves.

The TickerWith a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ivo Karlovic in his Monte Carlo opener, Nikolay Davydenko wins his comeback match after being sidelined with a foot problem for most of the season. "I didn't know myself if I [would] play good or not because first match after three months. I really enjoyed," said Davydenko.

The TickerVenus Williams goes almost 2 1/2 hours against Sania Mirza in the second round of Charleston before winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

"I think when she's playing against me, she's got go for it... I'm supposed to win this match. So I think that gives her an opportunity to swing freely," said Williams. "I've been in these situations before, so I rely on that, that I have done that and come through."
