The TickerNovak Djokovic has hired Thomas Muster's former trainer, Gebhard Phil-Gritsch. "I took a break after Monte Carlo and have been working solely on my fitness," Djokovic said in Rome. "It’s been a painful week! He’s a new person with lots of innovations, but he hasn’t changed everything for the sake of it. We’re working from a good basis already and concentrating on endurance, on strength in the legs.

"I’m always trying to improve myself in any aspect, and as soon as I feel like I can’t improve any more with a certain member of the team, then I say ‘sorry, no hard feelings’. I feel like things are coming together and hopefully I can reach the highest level for the most important tournaments."

The TickerDinara Safina plays her first event as world No. 1 at Stuttgart this week. "It feels very good," she said. "Staying No. 1 is a challenge. But I want to enjoy the challenge.

"'My mission is not finished yet. I want to win a Grand Slam. I have to work hard but I think I can do it."

The TickerScott Draper is exploring a coaching role in tennis following back problems that have curtailed his fledgling golf career, reports the Melbourne Age. He would prefer to be based in Australia but is also willing to go on the circuit, having applied to fill the role of Ana Ivanovic's coach earlier this year.

The TickerDavid Nalbandian may require surgery on his right hip, reports Clarin. A decision will be made following medical examinations later this week.

The TickerNikolay Davydenko, who missed much of the beginning of 2009 with a heel injury, is No. 11 in the rankings released Monday. It's the first time the 27-year-old Russian has been out of the Top 10 since May 23, 2005. He reached a career-high No. 3 in 2006.

The TickerItaly and the U.S.A. will contest the Fed Cup final after wrapping up semifinal victories on Sunday.
ITA-RUS 3-1: Svetlana Kuznetsova temporarily staved off Russian defeat with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Flavia Pennetta, but Francesca Schiavone sealed the tie for the Italians with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Fed Cup debutante Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

CZE-USA 2-3: The American team of Liezel Huber and Bethanie Mattek-Sands came back from a set and 5-2 down to clinch the semifinal against the Czech duo of Iveta Benesova and Kveta Peschke. Earlier, Benesova defeated Mattek-Sands 6-3, 6-1 and Alexa Glatch sent the tie to the deciding doubles rubber with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Petra Kvitova.

The World Group playoff ties ended with two blowouts and two nail-biters. Serbia, led by Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic, defeated Spain 4-0 and Ukraine shut out Argentina 5-0. But Germany and France had to go three sets in the decisive doubles against China and the Slovak Republic, respectively, to grab spots in next year's World Group.

The TickerRafael Nadal wins his fifth straight Barcelona title, defeating David Ferrer 6-2, 7-5.
