The TickerAs a result of Serena Williams' first-round loss in Marbella, Dinara Safina will become No. 1 the week after next on April 20th. Williams will lose her ranking points from winning Charleston last year and will not be able to replace them fully because the tournament has been downgraded and now offers fewer points than in 2008.

Safina's debut at No. 1 will make her and Marat Safin the first brother-sister duo to both be ranked No. 1 at some point in their careers.


The TickerSerena Williams plays -- but loses -- 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to Klara Zakopalova in Marbella. Williams said she was hampered by the leg injury that affected her in Miami.
